Four Paths Through Morrowind - A Modded Faction Guide
Last updated: June 5th 2025
Introduction
These days, with province mods like Tamriel Rebuilt, Morrowind features a huge amount of low- and mid-level content spread across many regions and factions. Just look at those TR quest counts!
Because of this, I find that trying to complete as much as possible in a single playthrough just doesn't make sense anymore. It takes too long, and you'll end up being way overpowered for a large part of it.
So I wanted to share four different characters I've planned, which cover all of Morrowind's joinable factions, with no overlap between them. Alongside these characters I will highlight mods that expand or improve these factions, or add new joinable factions to the game.
I roughly estimate that there are around 200-350 quests available exclusively to each character, and hundreds of other quests that are available to all.
For a broader set of mod recommendations, see Danae's list, the Modding OpenMW lists, or the TR Recommended mods for example.
Compatibility
- All mods are compatible with the regular Morrowind engine and OpenMW. Your choice.
- All mods are compatible with each other (the ones on the same character at least) and with the popular Beautiful Cities of Morrowind. Where necessary, compatibility patches are available on the relevant mod pages. Always read through the mod pages!
- The MOMW Patches page has some extra compatibility patches you may need between specific mods. For example, the Doors of Oblivion+TOTSP Patch (Tomb of the Snow Prince). A lot of these patches are also meant for non-OpenMW players.
All four characters share the following core set of 'quest' mods:
- Tamriel Rebuilt
- Project Cyrodiil
- Skyrim: Home of the Nords
- Expansion Delay
- Morrowind Quests Redux
- Tribunal Facelift
- Solstheim - Tomb of the Snow Prince
- AFFresh (new quests from original Morrowind dev Douglas Goodall)
Note: While the above mods can be considered suitable to newer'ish players, many of the mods mentioned below make pretty significant changes. These are mainly aimed at returning players who've played these factions before, and want to change things up.
Character #1: The Opportunistic Imperialist – For the Empire and the Nine
Serving the Empire through faith and coin. Mostly coin.
Faction | Mods |
---|---|
House Hlaalu | Roleplay Options for Great House Hlaalu, Dallara Odai Plateau (Alternative: OAAB Odai Plateau) |
Imperial Legion | Imperial Legion Expansion |
Imperial Cult | Religion Elaborated, The Will of the Divines, Heleran Tomb Replacer |
Fighters Guild | Fighters Guild Improved |
Census and Excise Office (New faction) | Census and Excise Office Faction |
Imperial Employment Office (New faction) | Imperial Employment Office |
Non-faction quests | Pilgrimage of Storm and War |
This character will have a lot of work to do for House Hlaalu and various Imperial organisations, especially through Tamriel Rebuilt. I imagine a melee and / or marksman build would work well this character. And don't forget to practice your speechcraft!
Character #2: The Disillusioned Pilgrim – A Crisis of Faith
A devoted follower of the Tribunal Temple, this character embarks on a new journey after delivering a simple package to a Blades agent. In the course of events that follow, the practice of slavery is not the only thing he'll begin to question.
Faction | Mods |
---|---|
Tribunal Temple | Temple Master, Religion Elaborated, Pilgrimage of the Lost House, Lost Relics of the Temple, Balmora Temple Redone Reintegrated,The Waters of His Glory |
House Redoran | Bal Isra and Indarys Manor Overhaul |
Twin Lamps (New faction) | OAAB Brother Junipers Twin Lamps |
Morrowind Main Quest (The Blades faction) | Morrowind Extended Cut: Crown Nerevarine Account, Join the Dissident Priests, Galen's Quest for Truth, Mamaea Awakened, New Ilunibi, Kogoruhn - Extinct City of Ash and Sulfur, Endusal and Tureynulal Redone, Unholy Trinity, Boss Overhaul - Dagoth Ur |
Tribunal Main Quest | Tribunal Main Quest Reforged, Sotha Sil Expanded |
Non-faction quests | Memento Mori, A Lovers' Quarrel, Red Wisdom - An Ashlander Prophecy, The Vanishing Ash-chirps, Caldera Priory and the Depths of Blood and Bone |
I think this is a good character for doing the Morrowind + Tribunal main quest, because story-wise it has interesting interactions with the Tribunal Temple faction. There's a lot to do here with all the Temple and MQ additions, Sotha Sil Expanded is especially large. Tamriel Rebuilt also features a lot of Tribunal Temple quests.
The number of quests available for House Redoran is fairly limited at this time, compared to the other great houses. The mod LGNPC Pax Redoran used to be pretty popular, but I'm not sure what its quality / compatibility is like these days.
If you really want more faction quests for this character, then I think joining the Fighters Guild or Imperial Legion makes the most sense (see the mods on Character #1). Though in my mind this is not ideal, roleplay wise.
Character #3: The Criminal Mastermind – A Knife in the Dark
A wise man once said, "If you are going to have crime, it at least should be organized crime". This character would agree.
Faction | Mods |
---|---|
Morag Tong | Morag Tong Polished |
Thieves Guild | Bal Molagmer Add-on, What Thieves Guild |
East Empire Company | Imperial Business, Rather Nice Factor's Estate, Raven Rock Enhanced |
Camonna Tong (New faction) | Camonna Tong - Puppet Master |
Dark Brotherhood (New faction) | The War for the Vvardenfell Brotherhood |
Barristers Guild (New faction) | Barristers Guild - Old Ebonheart questline |
Non-faction quests | Ebonheart Underworks, Greymarch Dawn - Whispers of Jyggalag |
A charismatic, business-savvy assassin and thief. There will be plenty of opportunity for thievery and figurative / literal backstabbing, thanks to the Camonna Tong and Dark Brotherhood questlines, and the Tamriel Rebuilt questlines for the Thieves Guild and Morag Tong.
House Hlaalu would also be a good fit for this character, though there could be some roleplay conflicts there with the Camonna Tong and Thieves Guild. That's why I put House Hlaalu on character #1.
Character #4: The Mad Wizard – World Wide Wizarding
While eagerly joining the Mages Guild at first, this character will eventually shift their interests to other, more unusual magical factions and destinations.
Faction | Mods |
---|---|
Mages Guild | Magical Missions Recharged, Mage Robes |
House Telvanni | Uvirith's Legacy, Rise of House Telvanni, RoHT 2.0 add-on, The Wizard's Affair |
Astrologian's Guild (New faction) | Astrologian's Guild |
Illuminated Order (New faction) | Illuminated Order Improved, Even More Fixes |
Non-faction quests | The Guiding Guild, Doors of Oblivion (And DoO Full Upscale), Wish Master, Tyrant and Ursurper, God of Worms - Succession, Scrolls of the Nine Barriers |
This character is all about magical factions and daedric realms! Both Rise of House Telvanni and Illuminated Order are classic quest mods, that have seen some recent updates to further polish them. Tamriel Rebuilt features a lot of additional quests for the Mages Guild and House Telvanni.
The end
And that wraps it up! I don't expect everyone to play these exact characters, but I hope that this showcases the value of splitting the vast amount of Morrowind quests this way, and that you found some new mods to play with!
